IN SHETLAND

Neshion Energy Park is a proposed development situated to the east of the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal and the Shetland Gas Plant in the North Mainland of Shetland, Scotland. Covering approximately 630 hectares, the site is strategically positioned within an area that will play a central role in Shetland’s transition from fossil fuels to clean energy technologies, as the community works towards Net Zero targets. By focusing energy developments in and around this existing industrial hub, the project aims to minimize the impact of the transition on other parts of the Isles, making it a strategic and desirable choice for Shetland’s future.

BY SHETLAND

Neshion Ltd is a local joint venture established to develop Neshion Energy Park. The development is being led by local company Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd (SAL). Founded in 1992 and based in Lerwick, SAL has over 25 years of experience in the energy industry. The company owns and operates Burradale Windfarm and Luggies Knowe Windfarm, demonstrating its expertise in renewable energy projects.

FOR SHETLAND

As a local venture, we are deeply committed to Shetland and its people. We want to ensure that this project will be of maximum possible value to the community, while also making a serious contribution to Shetland’s energy future and the country’s energy transition. Our goal is to align the positive outcomes from the project with local needs and aspirations by creating the package of benefits with input from the community. Delivering on these aspirations and those of the Scottish government and Shetland Islands Council can help us become a standard bearer for projects across Scotland.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Neshion Energy Park will consist of up to 10 wind turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 200m, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), access tracks and zones for other energy-related infrastructure.  The total generating capacity of the energy park will be over 50 megawatts (MW).

The Site
The Neshion Energy Park site is situated within an established industrial landscape adjacent to one of Europe’s largest oil terminals. The site boasts exceptional wind resources, making it an ideal location for a renewable energy park dedicated to generating clean, sustainable energy.

Energy Consents Unit (ECU)
As the Proposed Development will have an installed capacity of greater than 50MW, an application for consent will be made to the Scottish Ministers under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989. Deemed planning permission will also be sought under section 57 of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997.  As the local Planning authority, Shetland Islands Council (SIC), will act as a statutory consultee in this process.

Grid connection
A grid connection application process is underway, and it is anticipated that there will be a connection locally, subject to network upgrades by the grid operator.
